Tattoo Care
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I look after my tattoo?
Everyone's skin is different, and will heal slightly differently. There is no general recommendation for what aftercare works best for everyone. However, there are a few things that are important to remember with a fresh tattoo:
Keep your skin clean and dry
Keep your new tattoo out of the sun
Leave it alone - don't pick, scratch, or rub your tattoo while it heals
Don't put sunscreen on your healing tattoo
Don't let your fresh tattoo soak underwater, but do wash it in the shower
Use only clean clothes, soap, aftercare, and towels on your tattoo
Most tattoos will take around two weeks to heal over. During the first couple of days, your tattoo may be slimy and weep a little bit. It might be a little red and painful. This is normal. After three to four days this should stop, and the top layer of skin will begin to dry out and peel away. The peeling stage can be itchy and gross looking, but this is normal. Once the tattoo has stopped peeling, the skin as fully regenerated. However, it can take a couple of months for the ink to settle into your skin.
It is very important to protect a newly healed tattoo from the sun, as the regenerated skin takes time to rebuild its natural defenses.
How long do tattoos take to heal?
How much tattoo aftercare cream should I use?
Only apply a thin layer of aftercare, one to two times a day. Do this until the skin stops peeling. Only apply tattoo aftercare cream to skin that is clean and dry to the touch. Never apply it to a tattoo that is still weeping or releasing plasma, as this can increase the risk of infection.
Being properly prepared for your appointment can be the difference between a good or bad experience. Turning up to your appointment well-rested, hydrated, and with food in your stomach can increase your pain tolerance and stamina. This will help you get through long, painful sessions. Avoid showing up to your appointment hungover or sick if you can.
